Ischgl in Tyrol (Austria) has a population of 1,500, 10,600 guest beds and lies at an altitude of 1,377m in Paznaun between the Silvretta and Verwall groups. The little village Mathon belongs to Ischgl. Together See, Kappl, Ischgl and Galtür form the Paznaun valley.

The former mountain farm village (Yscla - Rhaeto Romanic for island) was colonized about a thousand years ago by Rhaeto Romans from Engadin and in the 13^th century by people from the Great Walser Valley.

At the end of the 19^th century, tourism became a new source of income. Between 1882 and 1889, Austrian and German alpine clubs built several alpine lodges. In 1964, the Silvretta cable car lift was opened and was at the time the longest cable car lift in Austria.

Every year the winter season starts at the end of November and lasts until the beginning of May. The opening and closing of the season is regularly celebrated with large pop concerts.
